Autosearch before preview

edited July 2004 in End User
with the report designer, how can you get the autosearch dialog to
appear before the preview so you can get the filter values before any
report is generated?

If you access the preview dialog from the Report Explorer, then the
autosearch dialog will be displayed prior to the report generating.

However, within the report designer, this does not occur because we felt it
would be annoying. Actually I can say that originally we had it designed
like that and it was extremely annoying.

Most end user reports are going to contain filtering criteria. Very
Rarely would they want to see all rows or use the default criteria.
Anyway this can be an option? After I make a custom autosearch dialog,
I am going to want to prompt them for the values (usually date ranges)
of the reports they want to run.

You can access the Data workspace and use the Query Designer to specify the
autosearch values that are saved down with the report.

The intent is that the Report Designer will be used to design reports, not
to run them. A user designing a report can use the query designer to specify
the autosearch values that are saved with the report and used when
    editing/previewing.

An end-user that is running a report can simply run the report from the
Report Explorer - in which case, the autosearch dialog will be displayed.

Ok that makes sense. If it comes up only when run and not designed then
thats what I really wanted anyway.
