Variable Timing Off in Subreport

I have a subreport inside the detail band of a report. Two of the datasets
of the overall report traverse data with the main report dataset and I have
DBText components on the summary band of the subreport to display the data
from these two datasets. I also have a variable on the summary band of the
subreport to calculate the percentage of a value of one of these datasets
from the value of the other. The variable doesn't display the correct
figures. I am guessing that this has to do with the timing of the variable
following the main report instead of the subreport?

How can I use a Variable component on the summary band of the subreport to
calculate a figure from values of two datasets that traverse data with the
main dataset of the report?

I do not understand the report configuration.

1. Data configuration

Let's start with the datasets. There are three datasets or two?

master dataset
detail1 dataset
detail2 dataset


2. Report layout.

Each report/subreport will traverse the datapipeline to which it is
assigned. If you have a main report and a subreport then only two datasets
will be traversed.

main report: master dataset
detail
subreport1 - detail1 dataset
detail
summary
