A licence question

edited July 2009 in End User
Hi I'm using RB 10.07 Enterprise version. I have created a simple
application to allow our customers to design / modify reports. My question
is, am I allowed (ie licensed) to distribute this application. I have read
the "RB Enterprise License.txt" file and it looks like I can but I'd like
confirmation as I don't want to breach any license agreements.

Here is an rbWiki article that I think will help you

    http://www.digital-metaphors.comr/rbWiki/General/Getting_Started/Licensing

if you still have questions, then pleae provide more details about your
    application.

I've looked at the wiki but am also giving you a description of the
    application for your comments.

I have written the application using the ppDesigner and ppReport controls.
All the application does is call "ShowModal" on the ppDesigner and handles a
help file. The designer allows the user to modify reports that I've already
created as well as creating new reports. I use this in-house but our
customer wants a copy of it. Does this sound like I can give out copies of
    it ?

    Hello Ian

Yes, that is how everyone uses RB. The purpose of the ppDesigner component
is to give the end user a way to modify reports.

The purpose of the RB Designer/ReportExplorer is to add end-user reporting
capabilities to your application. The main focus of your application should
    be something other than querying/reporting.

If your application has only the Designer/ReportExplorer and nothing else -
then the main and only focus of the application is clearly
querying/reporting - this is a violation of the license.

Thanks for that Nard, I have informed our company that this application must
not be given to our end users.

    Kind regards,

    1) I have another couple of questions regarding this application. Is it
possible to buy a license to allow me to distribute this application to a
single user ? If so, do you have an email address I should use to do this.

    2) If the only solution is for my user to purchase your software and create
his own application, can he buy version 10.07 or do you only sell the very
latest release ? As our core reporting application is built around version
10.07, would reports built with your latest library still work with it ?

    Regards,

    Ian

We do not have a separate type of license such as you describe.

We only sell the latest release, RB 11.RB 11 can open and run RB 10.x
reports, however reports saved with RB 11 cannot be opened/run with RB 10,
due to new properties introduced by RB 11.

Either your user could purchase the software and build his own application,
or you could purchase an RB license for him and then provide him with the
pre-built app. That way you could just use your existing RB 10.07. That
would still be within the spirit of the license.
