Printing Problem with specific machine

edited June 2002 in General
Hi All,

I have an application which is running perfectly on about 300
machines. The program brings all reports up in a preview screen and
the users can print from there. On one machine (Win NT 4), when they
try to print any of the RB reports, the display shows that it's
printing the last page plus one and nothing ever prints. For
instance, if trying to print a 10 page report, it will say printing
page 11 and nothing will ever come out. It does not hang the machine
and anything in the program which does not use RB will print fine.
Also, the user can print from MS Word and all other applications with
no problems. I'm using RB v6.03 and D6.

I know that this is machine dependant but it only seems to affect RB
reports. What should I look for as a probable cause?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Steve Harp

First make sure you have the latest printer drivers and the latest SP for
NT. Otherwise, is there anything in particular you can think of which
clearly differentiates this machine from the other 300 machines?

The only difference they have noticed is that this machine has 2
printers defined for it and the others have only one.

Try removing one of the printers. The idea is to try to replicate the same
exact setup as the other machines on which you know the application runs. If
the application does run once you do that there might be a conflict or a
    problem with the printer driver(s).

We can't do that. These machines are own by a client and they have
extremely restrictive security measures concerning what can and can't
    be done to their machines.

Besides, how do you explain the fact that MS Word and other
applications print just fine? Also, Why can we print just fine from
within our application using a TRichEdit but not from any RB report?
This seems to point to something in RB that handles the printer
differently than Word or TRichEdit. What is different?

Have you tried upgrading to the latest printer drivers? It is obviously an
obscure problem given that the app works on all of your 300 machines except
one. This basically comes down to process of elimination based on what is
different between this machine. So far the only difference, from what I
understand, are the print drivers. We could install those drivers here if
you tell us which specific drivers are being used.

The issue is resolved. As it turns out, they didn't have 2 printers
as I had been told. What they had was 2 print drivers (emulations)
defined for the same printer (one of which was Post Script).
Apparently, the program was trying to use the PS emulation and
failing. The customer deleted the PS driver definition and the
    problem went away.

    Thanks for your help,
    Steve
