Exporting to PDF

edited March 2003 in General
Hello,

I want to be able to export my report (PDF will be great). I 've seen that
there are two 3rd party tools that can do it (TExtraDevices from Waler and
ReportBuilder Export Devices from Pragnaan). My first question is, did I mis
some other tool ? And then, I want the opinion of users, Is on better than
the other or do I have to just buy the cheapest ?

Thanx

Julien

    Hi Julien,

I don't have any particular axe to grind, but this weekend I downloaded the
Waler component (didn't know which was better either, but I needed a quick
and cheap solution and figured I could write-off the $50 to experience if
    it didn't work out).

The Waler component was plugged-in in minutes, even though I had to
recompile the source with a compiler directive (I'm using D5 Professional
and RB6.02 Standard right now, upgrades pending soon when cashflow
    permits!!).

I got an email back from Waler the same afternoon, advising me how best to
get their stuff to work with my particular combination of Delphi and RB
(I'd figured it out in the intervening hour or so, but I was damn impressed
with getting a support response from them on a Saturday).

None of my reports are particularly complicated but the thing just
recompiled, dropped in and worked. Nothing else needed changing at all. My
client is happy because over the weekend he got (at short notice) "print to
excel" and "print to PDF" options on every single one of his reports, and
it didn't take me much time to do at all.

I don't know if the Pragnaan option is significantly better than the Waler
one, but I am certainly happy with what I got - a bargain, to be honest.
There are various options to save the PDF so that it can (or can't) be
edited, printed, etc etc - quite a surprising amount of flexibility.

If you go with the Pragnaan option, please follow this thread back up and
let us all know how you got on.

    Cheers

Thank you for this very complete answer. I'll tell you if I choose Pragnaan
    and why.
    Cheers,

The best way to decide is to try both packages and pick the one you like.
There is a demo at www.waler.com/download.htm that will work with your
reports. The only limitation is that it will only export 1 page.

I havent even looked at the Pragnaan (but will check it now anyway).

However, I've been using the Waler component for nearly 3 years with a
variety of versions of RB to (primarily) PDF and other formats.

    1) It has never let me down
    2) It performs well
    3) The price tag is very reasonable
    4) There have always been prompt updates to work with the latest releases of
    RB.
    5) Those updates have been free

I dont know what more I need or expect.

    Try it.

    Well,

Since I posted the first message of the thread I didn't have time to look
further at both component. But James Waler was the only one (of the two
"competitors) to post a message and all other posts are saying that his
component is a great one. These are two good points for James Waler.

I don't have that much time (well, none of us have that much time), so
unless I get more good news in favor of Pragnaan, I think that I will choose
    Waler ...

Please Clive, if you look at the Pragnan component in the next few days, let
me know your opinion about it.

    Thanx

    Julien

Thank you James, my schedule is a little bit overloaded for the moment so I
don't have time to download and install your component but I think that I
will in a near future ...
