DotNet?

edited July 2003 in General
Hi,

Any plans to develop a version of RB for MS DotNet?

We've moved from Delphi to DotNet and can't find a report writer that comes
anywhere near to the functionality of RB.

We're developing a thin client Windows and browser based solutions. Maybe
there would be a way for us to write the Report Writing solution in Delphi
and use dotnet to retrieve the XML data to drive the report layout tool?

Thanks,
Peter

    Article: .Net ReportBuilder Support?
    ----------------------------------------

Digital Metaphors is very excited about the .Net platform and Delphi for
    .Net.

The Digital Metaphors creative team is currently working towards creating
RB4D4DN (ReportBuilder for Delphi for .Net). The time frame for a release is
    unknown at this time.

Borland is incrementally releasing Delphi for .Net previews and we are
anxiously awaiting the final release of Delphi for .Net.

That's great news. I should be able to use this within Visual Studio.Net
    then?

    Thanks

    Peter,

The current goal is to support Delphi for .Net. The plan is to port the
existing code to VCL for .Net, which relies upon the Borland VCL for .Net
assemblies. Any compatability with Visual Studio .Net is unknown at this
    time.

    Nico,

I think you'd be missing out on a HUGE market if you didn't have a version
for Visual Studio - plus I'd have a decent report writer for my app :-)

I've looked around and there isn't anything out there at the moment worth
    considering apart from Crystal Reports.

    Cheers

    Agree.
VS.NET will almost certainly win the fight with D4.NET at my company.

    Hi Nico;

This is great for Delphi developers who will have a tool to move their
"existing code" to .Net framework. And I certainly appreciate DM for
being so considerate, however this port will not be a "native" .net code
that any other language can use. Which means lots of DM's time will be
used up just to move current delphi developers to .Net and DM can loose
a big opportunity grabbing the C#, VB.net, C#builder and etc. market.

I agree. VS.NET is here now and is in serioius need of a good report
writer. The only one that comes close is Active Reports from Data
Dynamics. I would much prefer to use RB but I need it to work with
VS.NET as well as any Borland .NET implementations. One of the great
features of .NET is language choice and a report writer that only
supports one language is going to have an uphill battle.

    David;

You perfectly summed up what I was trying to say. I hope DM's developer
team is reading this thread. The VCL.Net will only be used by the legacy
Borland's tool (Delphi, C++), and it's only for transitional process.

I can understand DM's position. On one hand, they have to use VCL.Net
not to loose the current customers and on the other hand, they need to
develop a completely new one written natively in C# for .Net. It's a big
effort, but you can see Developer Express started long time ago and now
they are on their way with great .Net products.

I think waiting for Delphi.Net to come before writing native .Net
components, is going to be too late for developers to use those components.

    Just my 2 cents...
