japanese character entry?

edited July 2004 in General
Hello-
When i try to put a Japanese label in a report, any way
I do it, I end up with something like: ???? ?
I do not need to enter the special keystrokes for Japanese
characters (indeed, I don't know Japanese anyway). All I need
is to take some Japanese word from another document, copy it into
the Windows XP clipboard, and paste it - just as I did here
(at least I see it as Japanese characters): ???

I have tried pasting into the report designer, pasting into
the Paradox data base table used to generate reports, and have
tried pasting into end user reports where the user can insert
their own labels (that would be ideal for my users). But in all
these cases, when I go to paste, no Japanese characters! It just
works in Microsoft Word, or in my browser e-mail. I am missing some
major concept, but where do I start ????

I guess you have to change the charset of your label. I had the same problem
displaying polish texts. Currently I guess there is no way to change the
charset. I've written some lines of code wich adds a simple combo box to the
designerd menu. Using this combo you can set the charset for each component
in a report. It's not perfect, but it workes. If you need it please send me
    an short mail.
I hope RB supports charset selection in the future.

    Hi Scott,

I'm sorry, unfortunately ReportBuilder does not support the use of
    Multi-byte character sets or Unicode.

    Please try the following steps:

    1. Install MS XP with Japanese support
    2. Change the value of Non Unicode Application setting to Japanese (in
Advance tab of Control Panel's Countries and Language)
    3. For RB, you can set charset of ppLabel/ppDBEdit to SHIFTJIS_CHARSET or
    DEFAULT_CHARSET (for Multi-Lanugage application).
    4. For Paradox db file, you can set the LANGDRIVER of Paradox (in BDE) to
Paradox 'japan' or 'ascii' ANSI (for Multi-Lanugage application).

    This method works for me.
