ReportBuilder 5.56 ! are you able to use variables?
?Hi Guys + Gals
My question is about a tool we are using that has report builder 5.56
built into (yes i know very old and doubtful anybody can even remember
it!) - i have done some extensive reading on the current documentation -
working my way through examples etc - but I for the life of me I can not
anywhere within the application see the variable button on the toolbar as
in the example and documentaion for the later versions most of the other
buttons appears to be there such as label , dbcalc etc - but no standard
variable button. My question is was this feature available in version 5 ?
or could have been locked down from us or not available unless you have a
certain license? if it wasnt available is there an equivalent function in
5 ? as looking through the examples given - reportbuilder functionality
seems very limited without this feature for exmple we need to calculate
percentages of running totals which would be very difficult /
unachievable without variables etc
any info on this one very much appreciated
many thanks

Variables are not useful unless in an end-user environment unless you have
access to RAP. It must have been the intention of the application creator
to exclude this feature.

Please understand that Digital Metaphors can only provide tech support to
the Delphi developers that purchase ReportBuilder. Digital Metaphors
receives no distribution royalties from Delphi developers that embed
end-user reporting solutions in their applications. It is the responsibility
of the software publishers that sold you the product to provide you with
tech support.
There is an end-user tutorial called Learning ReportBuilder that can be
downloaded from our web site for free. See the following article for more
infomation.

Article: Learning ReportBuilder
--------------------------------
Learning ReportBuilder is a complete learning system designed to teach end
users how to build a range of reports. This system includes a 125-page PDF
file, a stand-alone application complete with a database, and a help file.
The PDF file is comprised of a series of tutorials that step end users
through the process of building reports as simple as a table listing and as
complex as crosstabs. The tutorials also introduce conceptual aspects of
report building along the way. The application is used in conjunction with
the tutorials so that the learning experience is interactive. The end user
just prints out the PDF file, runs the application, and learns
ReportBuilder. The help file is accessible from the application, so all
three tools work together to provide a seamless learning environment.
Learning ReportBuilder installs into C:\Program Files\LearnReportBuilder.
When the system has successfully installed, a complete set of instructions
appears in the form of a 'ReadMe' doc, so the end user knows just what to do
upon installation.

Ok thanks for that but i think there has been some cross wires or you
have misunderstood my original post!. We are working on a government site
as independant consultants and evaluating this products capability in
order to decide whether to suggest an upgrade to a later version - or use
an alternative reporting application
The tool our clients are using has a stand alone version of report
builder 5.56 as a link from it it is not embedded within an application
and having read your documentation for version 10 what we are working
with appears to offer most of the functionality including the calc
workspace / RAP environment of version 10.
Having read through your documentation / tutorials for version 10 - all I
need to know is did version 5.56 offer the report builder component
library Variable component - as most of the others such as dbcalc, label,
system variable, barcode, subreport etc appear to be there everything but
the extremely useful variable component - all i need is a yes or no
answer was this a standard feature available in version 5.56. Enterprise
Edition - or was it only incorporated into the later / different versions
I appreciate any advice on this one
many thanks

RB Version 4 introduced TppVariable and TppSystemVariable. (Earlier versions
had a TppCalc component, that was discontinued starting with RB 4).
Access the RBuilder.hlp, select the table of contents, and then select
ReportBuilder Reference | Whats New | History of Versions. You can then see
the list enhancements for each version.
