Issues with Citrix Presentation Server Environment?

edited August 2006 in General
Hello All,

I hope this is an acceptable group to post to. Kindly inform me if this is
the incorrect forum, in which, to post and I'll re-post accordingly.

I support an ERP that utilizes ReportBuilder as its reporting engine. I am
having intermittent trouble with one of my end-user's Citrix enviornments,
and wish to know if there are any known issues with using Microsoft Terminal
Services that are augmented by Citrix's Presentation Server 4.0 product.

Environment:

Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 Advanced Ed.
Windows Server 2003 SP1
ReportBuilder Version ____________ (checking on version from
developer...will post information once I've got it.)

Issue:

Intermittently, the report builder will cause a blank report to be sent to
the printer share. The printer share logs an error event 6161, and the user
gets no print out. If the user reprints the document, typically, it will
print fine. Unless the user uses a Print Preview from the RB interface,
they will not know that the document was blank and failed to print. The
error that pops up during a Print Preview is "Cannot generate report.
PrintPosition exceeds available page space." Event though I can see the
report in the background, once I click OK on the error message, the report
goes blank and sends a blank page to the printer.

TroubleShooting Done:

Applied hotfixes and patches to Citrix servers, per Citrix technician.
Verified that print driver being used is a Microsoft-provided driver.
Verified full rights exist on the C:\windows\spool folders on the Citrix and
print servers.
Went through the report design to verify that the PrintPosition of each band
doesn't exceed the printable margins.

Thank you for taking a look at my issue,

David Notarius

    Hi David,

This is not a known issue. Most issues we've had in the past with Citrix
systems were dealing with access rights to the printer driver. Are you able
to recreate this error printing a report directly to a local printer without
using a terminal service? Which version of ReportBuilder are you currently
using? I would recommend upgrading your version to the latest major version
    that was released.

    Thanks for the reply, Nico.

I've requested that information again and will post as soon as I know the
version number for you. The latest problem that the end-user has
experienced is that, as soon as the user hits the print icon (from within
print preview,) the application shuts down. This has been recurring
(intermittently,) but I haven't been able to determine a root cause. I read
on another posting from your sites that it may be possible to turn on RB
tracing to debug. Unfortunately, since I don't control the application
code, this will have to be orchestrated through the application vendor. Do
you believe that this would prove a useful route to pursue?

    Update:

The version of ReportBuilder that is in the application, currently, is 6.x.
There is a new build of our application that is awaiting General
Availability release status (once it passes the QA testing and Limited
Availability phases.) This new version includes RB 10.

    Hi David,

I would suggest trying the new version with RB 10.x. There have been
numerous improvements since RB 6.x was released. Are you a registered user
of ReportBuilder or are you using an application with ReportBuilder
    built-in?

    Hello Nico:

Thank you for your suggestion to upgrade. I will definitely get that build
into production as soon as possible. We are a VAR that supports an
application that has ReportBuilder built in.
