Win2K to WinXP breaks something in RB7.04 and ExtraDevices

edited October 2009 in Devices
Hi all,

Had a workstation on a Novell 3.12 net go south last weekend and got
its replacement installed Thursday. It's running everything the same as
its predecessor, but has WinXPSP3 installed, instead of Win2KSP4. ALL
the other workstations are Win2K. All are running an app written in
Delphi 7, using BDE and ReportBuilder 7.04 with the corresponding
TExtraDevices version to 7.04. The error is only cropping up on the new
WS. The application version is the same as she was running successfully
last week.

On Thursday and on Friday, the new WS threw a hissy fit printing a
report. "Scan line index out of range" One day it did it while starting
to paint the cancel button on the printing, the next just after
painting the button. The first day MIGHT have been caused by using
Large Fonts on the system (idiot IT guy, not me). But I corrected that
before the second-day mishap. The running procedure at the time was
WriteBMP in the TXAll.pas file,

so, any ideas for an ol' dinosaur like me?

Thanks in advance, GM

If the issue happens withouth the use of TExtraDevices, then I would try
updating the video and printer drivers.

For anyting related to TExtraDevices, you might try emailing Waler.

    Nard,

If you are talking to the folks at Waler, can you give 'em a nudge to
check their email. It's been three days and nary a reply, not even an
    acknowledgement of receipt.

    Gary,

Unfortunately, we have had other complaints, have tried to email Waler, but
    also get ignored. :)

We have had many requests from customers to add more native export formats
to ReportBuilder and are researching it.

You are using some very old development tools. I would try downloading
ReportBuilder 11 and the latest ExtraDevices and perform the same test. And
perhaps remove ExtraDevices and try one of the other export solutions.

    Nard,

Feared most of what you have to say. My BIG problem is that this was
'supposed' to be a stable project that could be safely ignored for a
while, while I spend time on a different project for a different
    customer.

I'm researching upgrading RB cost-wise. Trying to make all the
pennies line up at this time of the year requires a little creativity.
But it might be the required. Certainly, I will re-evaluate my Waler
allegiance (not that I had one. I have the PsRB stuff too).

Time and money. The eternal lights at the far end of the tunnel.

    Thanks, GM

    Nard et al,

Still no Waler response. Done with the software. Put in an options
menu choice to Use Alternative PDF Creator and then put in an "if
checked" use psRB ExportDevices call. Took rather less time than I
thought. And it works. Even with venerable old Delphi 7 and RB 7.

I know now who's getting my upgrade money first thing in the new year.

Most document editors such as Word and Open Office can open and edit .rtf
documents. Or am I not understanding the requirement?

    Hi Nard,

That's the way I use it now. Generate rtf and edit with msword. Problem is
that alot of reports are not (or can't) be 100% accurate represented in rtf
while keeping the editing benefit. I can export it as textblocks but the
editting experience is less in that case. Also a problem are headers,
footers, lines and other shapes in case you want to edit the generated
    document.

    Regards,
    Jeroen.
