Considering RB Server. End user designed reports?

edited September 2003 in Server
Hello,

... I am considering report builder server as a possible solution.
... We are developing an IntraWeb ISAPI application.
... We are using DBISAM for a database.

We want our end users to have the ability to design their own reports
against the data without having to have any application installed on their
computer. I.E. Staying in the web based environment along with our IntraWeb
application.

Will this product handle this? is their a way for end users to design their
own reports?

Thanks much,

Dave.

Thanks for your interest in ReportBuilder Server.

ReportBuilder Server enables reports to be published to remote client
applications and web browsers. In other words, it enables reports to be
previewed by remote apps and browsers. There is no support for enabling
remote apps or browsers to design/edit reports.

One option would be to build a custom web interface that acts as a
report wizard for your end-users. (For an example of a report wizard,
see the ReportBuilder report designer. Select File | New... and then
select the main report wizard.) The web interface would enable the
end-user choose fields, report styles, etc. Then the web application
would generate a report template (.rtm file) that would be saved in a
report volume directory defined to the report server application. Then
the report could be generated and previewed by the browser.

ReportBuilder Server is a multi-tier solution:

Report Server <------> Web Tier <----> Web Browser

What you are suggesting for me to build is what I am looking for from you.
(Or some other 3rd part reporting VCL). I am looking for a reporting VCL
that has items needed for allowing the end users of web applications such as
IntraWeb to design their own reports. It might be in the best interest of
your company to make such a standard feature?

We were looking for something along the same lines, but still wanted to use
RB, so what we did was extend RB existing end-user report designer to work a
little more directly with our data sources, plus enhanced the report
parameter system, and added content security descriptions. We will then
extend our web application to allow a direct upload to the site and it will
be automatically integrated with the other reports. It should work great.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I did not mean to imply that designing reports from a web browser
interface is not a useful feature. This is something that we might
    pursue in the future.
