Problem with reports and Default Printer

edited October 2001 in General
Hello,

A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with one report using a custom paper
size, that when printed from the preview window, it did not print anything
but caused the printer to start throwing out page after page until you
stopped the printer. I thought it had to do with the printer, but the only
way we found to solve this problem, was to assign an specific printer to the
report instead of using the value "Default" as the printer. I figured it
had to do with using a custom paper size and a dot matrix printer (Epson
LX-330).

However, last night, I tried to print a standard 8.5x11 report to a dot
matrix printer (Epson FX-570), and it printed the contents of the first
page, but instead of printing the second page, it started printing pages
with only the header and footer of the page, until we canceled the printer
process in RB and turned off the printer. When checking the printer spool,
we saw that the report had generated 2576 pages. To solve this problem,
again, we had to assign the printer to the report, instead of using the
value "Default". Now I'm pretty sure it is RB doing this, though I don't
know if it is a known issue. I think the reason it did not print anything
on the first case, was because that report did not have a header or a
footer.

I just tested the same report in a local ink-jet printer, and it printed
without problems.

Any ideas?

This isn't a known issue. Perhaps there is something in the report that is
causing infinite pages. There is an article in Tech-tips General which
describes ways you can get inifitie pages. When you ran the 8.5x11, did it
    also preview correctly?

    Hi, Jim,

I've had the inifite pages problem happen to me, and this doesn't feel like
it. The reports in the Preview window look perfect, no infinite pages or
even extra blank pages. It's when you print them that it starts printing
indefinitely. Also, it has happened only with dot matrix printers and the
problem disappears when you assign the printer you are using to the Printer
setting of the report. The strange thing is that if you use "Default" as
the Printer setting, when the Print dialog is displayed, it shows the
correct printer, it just doesn't print correctly.

    Hello,

Yesterday we got the same problem again with a different customer, a
different report and a different printer. It is a report using a customer
paper size, and the report was working fine until we installed yesterday the
new version of our app which contains RB 6.02. I think the previous version
used RB 6.00, though it could have been RB 5.56 (not sure at this point).
The problem is the same: you preview the report OK (no infinite pages), but
when you try to print the report, RB starts printing page after page
containing only the header and footer of the report. If the report doesn't
have a header or a footer, it seems RB is just printing empty pages. To
solve the problem: change the report's Printer setting from "Default" to the
printer you are using locally. This time the problem surfaced with a HP
    Deskjet 695C.

I still don't think it is a problem with our reports, since the problem
disappears simply by changing the printer setting.

If the Report.PrinterSetup.PrinterName is set to Default, then RB should
detect what the currently installed printer is and display its name in the
printer dialog drop down. If you are seeing 'Default' when the dialog
shows, then there is some problem in detection of the installed printer for
that machine. In these cases, was the local printer set as the machine's
    default printer?
