Which products should select

edited June 2004 in Server
Hi all,
I'm new to the group. I'm presently gathering information's about reporting
tools. After reading some article, it looks that ReportBuilder is a good
tool. I wonder if the product is near to Crystal Report? Which RB edition
should I buy, if I have to develop in Delphi 7/8? If I want my users can
customize their own reports as well.

Can anyone tell me what is the "RB Server 7 Deployment License". Do I have
to buy. Is there a licence to buy prior the end-users can use.

Thanks.

Thanks for your interest in ReportBuilder.

    1. The overall feature set is quite comparable. ReportBuilder is superior to
Crystal Reports in that is a native Delphi object class library that can be
tightly integrated into Delphi applications. ReportBuilder's object oriented
architecture enables the product to be extended - just as you can add new
component to Delphi, you can add new components to ReportBuilder to extend
the built-in functionality or customize it. ReportBuilder data access
support, includes support for all popular Delphi Data Access component sets
    that are available.

    2. All of the ReportBuilder Editions include support for Delphi 5, 6, and 7.
We are currently working on supporting Delphi VCL.NET.

    3. For enduser reporting solutions, you need either Professinal or
Enterprise. I recommend that you download a trial version of RB Server
Edition so that you can evaluate the entire spectrum of functionality. RB
Server Edition will install RB Enterprise and RB Server. RB Enterprise
includes a run-time Pascal environment called RAP that enables developers
and end-user to code calculations and event-handlers without requiring
Delphi. The code can be saved as part of the report definition, outside of
the application executable. For examples, run RBuilder\Demos\RAP. The Server
Edition enables reports to be published to remote client applications and
    web browsers.

We use RB in our Delphi apps, and in a PHP web application. It's a solid
product and works great. Compared to Crystal, it's more robust and
definitely easier to distribute and support. If you are building an
application with embedded reports and distributing it to a lot of customers,
    definitely use RB.

But I also must say that if we need to do a one off report in the office we
will do it in Crystal long before we do it in RB. The Crystal report
designer is a lot easier to use than RB's. RB's crosstab tool is also
    really weak compared to Crystal.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Terry.
