"An error occurred while trying to initialize the BDE"

"An error occurred while trying to initialize the BDE"

I get this when I try to run the main reports demo.

What's it trying to do? I have the BDE on my system and i can open the
BDE administrator and various configs within.

What database do the demo dpr's want?

I've isolated this to the BDE package and the BDE - will take this up
    on Borland's groups.

    Excellent work isolating this...

I get the sarcasm, and I'm sorry about the BDE message, but after the
last 24 hours in *hell* with an RB problem that is still not resolved,
everything I see now I first blame RB.

When I got the RB demo (which wasn't at all relevant to the problem
although it is a cool demo), it crashed.

I got the same error opening the standard sample projects that come with RB.

I then found I could open the BDE Admin and all the db's therein, so my
thought was that there was some db setting or demo db that was missing
    for the RB samples.

    I posted the message.

I then proceeded to create my own BDE test project and got the error
again, and that's when I realized it was a generic BDE problem. I
hadn't realized that BDEAdmin can work but the BDE components not.

In the old Netscape 4.7x newsgroup reader, I would have canceled my
previous message. In Mozilla, that's either not present or buried
somewhere where I haven't found it.

So I posted the message retracting the previous message.

PS: If I seem from this message like I have a lot of time on my hands,
it's because I'm sitting around waiting for support on my summary-band
issue and watching the clock approach five at which time I will have to
add 4 more days to the amount by which I've missed this deadline since
the client will be gone to Tuesday.

And PS, I wish you were replying to that message instead...

    Actually no sarcasm intended...

    P.S.
I'd be happy to code the calculation for you tonight if you can send an
    example project to support@digital-metaphors.com.

I'll even make a run at it without an example, just based on your
    description in general.

Finally, if you a have a critical issue that must be solved immediately, the
highest priority support we provide is over the phone...

    Really? Sorry about that...

I thought my message looked kind of funny... "Error message: "an error
occurred in the BDE"", follow-up: "I have isolated the problem to the
    BDE"... You: "Good work".

Next I'll be isolating "Missing operator or semicolon" to a missing
    operator or semicolon...

    Nothing to be sorry about.

We sometimes work for hours isolating a problem in a sample project, and it
turns out not be RB at all. Anytime you can eliminate RB as 'the problem'
on your own it is an immense help to us.

Also we generally don't greet customers who have just pulled an all-nighter
and are obviously at wits' end with sarcasm. :)

Well, I may have cursed your cat a couple of times last night , but
OTOH, I'm one of the defenders of the upgrade price and a frequent
    recommender of RB.

Anyhow, I just uploaded the fixed revision to the client and I'm off to
    enjoy the weekend.
