Customize a report by customizing an RTM file at runtime?

It occurs to me that I can create a customized report by modifying an
RTM file at runtime and then loading it.

I feel comfortable with this because the resulting RTM is easy to audit
as a debugging tool, vs keeping track of what got created or not as
objects at runtime.

Any critiques or experiences?

I'm sure you are already doing this, but in case you're not, then you should
keep a backup of the rtms somewhere so that you can move back to the
original rtm, if you encounter an error in loading after you've modified it.
