follow up on infinite page report query
Hi
Firstly thanks for your quick assistance with my query from a few weeks
ago and I was hoping I could follow up on it.
My query was in relation to the report builder that we use, which is 6.03
If I make one of the bands exceed the report page height, which I guess
is A4, the resulting report seems to create an infinite amount of pages.
You suggested that I set the band's property of PrintHeight to be
phDynamic.
This seemed to work and I got dialogs telling me that I was exceeding
the page height when I tried to make it too big.
I submitted this change to our QC department and they found that if I
combine header, detail and/or footer (at least 2 of them) to be a total
of height greater than the A4 page, then the infinite page count problem
occurs again.
I was wondering if you could point out what I'm doing wrong, or a
possible fix that I could apply?
I've tried to find events that tie to the changing of the header, detail
or footer sections to set a maximum combined height on the three, but
couldn't identify any events that might be called to trap the combined
height from occuring.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Steve

I must first stress that you are using a very old version of
ReportBuilder. Later versions handle report height checking much more
elegantly as well as provide the proper tools to customize your reports
the way you need.
I'm a bit unclear about what you are trying to accomplish. It sounds
like you are trying to fit a report larger (taller) than an A4 piece of
paper into a A4 piece of paper.
This is simply not possible with ReportBuilder. The main design of the
report (all bands combined) cannot exceed the vertical space of the
paper used. This is something the designer of a report needs to be aware
of when creating a new report.
There are ways to work around this limitation such as (for example)
using stretchable memos or RichTexts inside dynamic bands as well as
regions and subreports. All these can be used to reduce the designed
height of a report, helping it fit in the allotted vertical space.
